THE SOLUTION
A couple of years ago Hamann started looking for a new backup solution. They made a comparison between the different options and Veeam came out as the best possible solution for their needs. “Because of our longstanding partnership with ePact, we trusted them that they would recommend us the best possible solution”, says Peter De Groote, ICT Infrastructure Manager at Hamann. Initially we started with regular online, on-premises and T-backups but due to the increasing threat of cyberattacks we have chosen a new strategy where we will keep our backups both online and off site.
“Since we were already using the backup solutions of Veeam, we had to search for a solution with seamless Veeam Integration”, says Peter De Groote. In addition, the solution had to be reliable with an European presence and predictable pricing model. The latter is important in case a large(r) restore would ever be required.
“It was a conscious decision to store our backups according to the 3-2-1 backup rule. We even decided to go a little further and added our own on-premises immutable server solution in the past year. This way, our data is stored in four different ways, which puts us in an even better position to protect ourselves against cyber attacks,” says Peter De Groote.
“When our online backup infrastructure is infected by an outside attack, we can fall back on Wasabi’s offline backups. This allows us to quickly restore important business functions, minimizing the impact on the business.”
THE RESULTS
“Our backup environment is running smoothly. The most important thing about our Wasabi Cloud Storage implementation with Veeam, is that we’re better protected against cyber attacks. You will never be a 100 percent sure, but we can confidently say that it will be easier for us to fall back on our offline backups if problems caused by cyber attacks in our online backup environment would occur. Since the last Veeam & Wasabi update our offline backups are also made immutable thanks to the new Object Lock Feature”, says Peter De Groote. This means that our backups can’t be modified, overwritten or deleted for a predetermined period of time.
Besides these advantages, Wasabi also offers a beneficial pricing model. “I’ve done a price comparison of Wasabi and its direct competitors and they came out as the best”, says Peter De Groote. “They off er a transparent pricing model, so you can be sure there will be no surprises at the end of the month. You just have to decide in advance how much terrabytes you want to purchase and immediately know the corresponding price.”
EPACT'S SOLUTION
Hamann is located in Wetteren since 2007and has been working with Uptime Group, and especially ePact, ever since. “We can say that we have a long and sustainable partnership. FUTURE VISION
Hamann has a lot of plans to ensure further growth. This also includes further development of their IT department, which is split in two parts: infrastructure and software. Last year, a new building was acquired at the company site which will cover more infrastructure to keep everything up and running. “For example, a new warehouse and new offices will be built and will also be requiring a lot of IT infrastructure, all things of which I will be responsible for.” says Peter De Groote. “We’re aiming for April 2023 to get everything ready.”
In addition, the software team will mainly focus on the development of web applications. “Our clients often require very specific applications and that’s the reason we’re mainly developing these inhouse. Last year we’ve built a new application which allows us to track our trucks in the BeNeLux and we’re currently developing a whole new BI environment. A lot is happening right now and we’re dedicated to continue our growth and keep investing in an innovative and future proof IT environment.
